Boxing Day Song

Christmas cards are tangling on silver guilt strings
And the walls are full to dangling with yuletide greetings
The tree is shedding needles into the shag pile
And late presents are being unwrapped
By the children's hopeful eyes

Stars are shining on the little fir tree
And the glitter of frost on the pavement
Shows it’s set to freeze
Cold enough for mince pies and mulled wine
And part of me is praying its cold enough
to snow this time

Credit cards are ringing to the sound of Christmas tills
Shop returns are bringing a whole host of extra bills
Santa’s gone from his grotto, no kids to ply with treats
He’s busy sucking humbugs
And stacking up the half price sweets

Stars are shining on the little fir tree
And the glitter of frost on the pavement
Shows it’s set to freeze
Cold enough for mince pies and mulled wine
And part of me is praying its cold enough
to snow this time

In amongst the wrapping and satsuma peel
Hidden with all the trappings of yesterday's meal
There’s a little glimmer from a hopeful thing
On closer inspection it's a cracker toy
Plastic heart on a silver ring

The bins are full to overflowing so I empty them outside
In the silver moonlight of this boxing night
The stars glint on the plastic heart I hold in my hand
And the pavement glitters
As snowflakes gently land

Stars are shining on the little fir tree
And the glitter of frost on the pavement
Shows it’s set to freeze
Cold enough for mince pies and mulled wine
And part of me is praying its cold enough
to snow this time

Accordion Heart

I've been singing this all morning so thought I'd add it here ~

Accordion Heart

Accordion heart
Give it a squeeze
The tune it plays
Might well please
And you’ll dance and sing
And feel real fine
As the last drop of music
Flows freely like wine

(Accordion, accordion, accordion, as the last drop of music flows freely like wine)

Baby, come hold me
Baby come close
Just raise your glass
And I’ll sing a toast
For the night is a blanket to throw on the ground
And we’ll watch for those shooting stars
And laugh at the sound
Of lovers still dancing
As the moon spins us round

Accordion heart
Give it a squeeze
The tune it plays
Might well please
And you’ll dance and sing
And feel real fine
As the last drop of music
Flows freely like wine

(Accordion, accordion, accordion, as the last drop of music flows freely like wine)

Slush Fool

(This one always seems to be best in the summer, perhaps it's the contrast of the thought of quiet winter in the midst of a busy summer day. An old poem from some years back.)

Slush Fool

He never liked me singing
He never took to my wings
So I sit on the fence
To wait for those
Little crumbs in the snow

Melting into the green
Mushed up rain dreams
If I decide to fly
What will you do?

If I decide
I'm no slush fool

Winter discord in this place
Catch your breath and the icy trace
Of words freezing in the space
Opening up between us

Spring is the dream
Melting into the green
If I decide to fly
What will you do?

If I decide
I'm no slush fool

He never liked me singing
He never took to my wings
I think I'm about to fly
I think I'm about to sing

Deep Mystery

Swimming up on the shore
With my water wings
Scales falling from my eyes
I'm back to the tide line
To hear the sand sing
Dragging the seaweed rhythm
Is there where I see the sunrise?

The wild horses couldn't keep me in my grave
And I'm washed up and not feeling to brave
Guess then, I'm on my knees to pray
Come Neptune, be my king
Not drowning, jusy need to sing
Dragging the seaweed rhythm
And when we smile it'll be a sunrise

All our lives pour into the sea
And yet it still retains deep mystery

The things we keep meaning

All those things keep
Weaving in between
A pattern repeating us

My life spread before me
A patchwork place
Of here and there
And there you are, again
And here I am
With all those words
Fitting them together
Making some semblance
Of it all

Those things we keep
Weaving in between
A pattern repeating us
Into these shapes

In between those words and shapes
The light shifts and the shadows fall
We move on past
Our lives spread out here and there
And all the spaces in between
Where all those things we keep

Just a pattern repeating
Instead of
The things we keep meaning

Falling Like Rain

Falling Like Rain

I count you in
I count you out
I came back
Without a doubt
Now it's down to you
What will you do
Here and now
Without a doubt

The sun is low
And stars aglow
Sea is calling
Music's falling
Like rain
On my skin again

You count me in
You count me out
I came back
Without a doubt
Now it's down to you
What will you do
Here and now
Without a doubt

…. and a Yeti

There is a creature I would love to see
A hominid, like you and me
That lives in mountains far from view
On snowy steppes where forests grew
And yet, I wonder if it can be
Still so hard to find a Yeti
What kind of creature can so quietly live
To cast no shadow or clue give
As to how and why and what it could be
Lost deep in our collective memory
And yet...

Are you snaggle-toothed and razor-clawed
Or panda-ish and prone to snore
Do you have fur, a mountain bear
Or are you feathered, scaly, hippy-haired
Big cat, primate, dinosaur
Do you sing or do you roar
Do you forage for fruit and nuts
Or do you hunt and rip out guts?
Questions I have asked since a child
About Sasquatch, Bigfoot, creatures of the wild
Does the fossil record show
That once giant apes lived in the snow
Maybe I should look on Google maps
Use satellites for camera traps
And yet...

We scour our universe for life out there
A million, billion stars at which we stare
Use telescopes, computers, space probes, SETI
But we haven't found you yet,Yeti
Would we be kind when we do
Would we step softly in your shoes
Leave you to live in quiet grace
The rarest of our so-called human race?
Stranger creatures have emerged
The coelacanth for centuries submerged
Raised, phoenix-like from the ocean floor
New creatures found practically next door
And yet...

I've seen strange creatures too
Lungfish, gloworms, ligers in a zoo
But on my list of things left to see?
World Peace, the Taj Mahal... and a Yeti

Fly to You

I'm sorry if I lean to hard my friend
But you're the rock on which I depend
A life spent on the wing
It's hard to find a place to cling
And we could fall and we could fail
But this love still prevails

And I thank you and say
We could fall and we could fail
But this love still prevails
And I fly to you
I would fly with you
And I cry with you
I would cry for you
So I thank you and say
We could fall and we could fail
But this love
Well... love prevails

I'm sorry when I'm too far to find you
When the nights are the hardest to get through
A night under the stars
When it's hard to know who we are
We could fall and we could fail
But this love still prevails

And I thank you and say
We could fall and we could fail
But this love still prevails
And I fly to you
I would fly with you
And I cry with you
I would cry for you
So I thank you and say
We could fall and we could fail
But this love
Well... love prevails

Your Beautiful Prison

If I try and walk this path again
Are you going to stand in my way or be my friend
What's clouding your view
What is it with you
So you think you've written my story well
Recognised all those little tells
Why would I care what you think of me
Engine's running and there's still a seat free
Of the weight of those bars of gold
A beautiful prison how easily you sold
Your smile
Lets ride out into the storm
One last universe before dawn
Engine's running and there's still a seat free
Don't you recognise me
What's clouding your view
What is it with you
If I try and walk this path again
Are you going to stand in my way or be my friend
